GLORIA'S MUSIC TAMPA CONCERTS
The Blog's purpose is help spread the word about the TAFEE Concert series, the Concerts in the UU Dome series, & add'l concerts which I help organize and/or wish to help publicize. Concerts are catch as catch can -- No set schedule.
TAFEE = Tampa Acoustic, Folk, Etc., Enthusiasts. It's not an organization per se; just a name I came up w/to identify the concerts. TAFEE Concerts are held at Skipper's Smokehouse on occasional Tuesday nights (TAFEE Tuesday) and also occasionally at Jimmy Mac's Restaurant in the Banquet Room.
"Concerts in the UU Dome" are held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa. For directions, etc. check out the church website at http://www.uutampa.org/ . There's also a concert schedule at the web site. (click on "concerts" from the home page)
I'm chair of the Concert Committee at the Tampa UU, am on the board of Friends of Florida Folk http://www.foff.org/, am a fan of acoustic blues and contribute the "Acoustic Connection" column to the Twelve Bar Rag, a bi-monthly publication of the Suncoast Blues Society http://www.suncoastblues.org/ .

The Suncoast Blues Society (SBS) is a local non-profit organization which has a mission of promoting the understanding and appreciation of The Blues. In furtherance of this mission and in partnership with the Brandon Regional Library, the SBS is sponsoring a Blues in the Library program featuring local bluesman MOLTEN MIKE. During this program, Molten Mike will perform solo-acoustic blues music and also discuss blues history. Plus there will be on display a sampling of books about the blues and blues cds which are in the library's inventory (available for browsing & check out).
Thousands of Tampa Bay area football and music fans have been entertained by Mike and his band during their past lively and enjoyable pre-game Blues music shows. The library blues program promises to be just as enjoyable -- only this time folks will experience a different side of Molten Mike as he presents solo acoustic blues.
Mike is originally from Seattle; however, his father was in the military so the family moved from place to place. In 1980, Mike (who was 23 at the time) finally settled down in the Tampa area. Upon arriving, he began checking out the blues scene and soon became an integral part of it himself. Over the years he has continued to hone his chops and to gain fansand acclaim.

BIO: Michael Smith was born in South Orange, New Jersey on September 7, 1941. He attended Our Lady of the Valley and Our Lady of Sorrows, Catholic schools, which later became the setting for some of his better known songs. He bought a guitar at fifteen (five dollars) and was soon playing in a group inspired equally by the Kingston Trio and Harry Belafonte. They called themselves The Kalypso Kids and played a lot of VFW halls and psychiatric hospitals.
By college age Michael and his family had relocated to Tampa Bay area and Michael attended St Petersburg Jr College where he formed a quartet called The Wanderers which played gigs on the beach and at local coffeehouses.
After that he began touring with a duet called The Talismen. "We hit every coffee-house in the world," Michael recalls. "Those were days when you got hired by the week and people stood in line. They didn't even have to know who you were. It was Folk Music, and Folk Music was happening."
Three years at The Flick in Miami followed, six nights a week. Michael did entirely his own material. "I would say the song was Fred Neil's. People would say 'Oh, I hadn't heard that one.' I'd say 'It's one of his better ones, don't you think?'" Michael has continued in the music business throughout his life. He still travels constantly, playing concert halls and house concerts, clubs and festivals. "I feel so grateful to get to do what I do," Michael says. "I feel I was born to write songs."
SONGWRITING SAMPLE: Not only has Michael performed and recorded his own songs, but they(especially "The Dutchman") have also been recorded by numerous other artists, Take a look at the list of Michael's songs that Steve Goodman recorded: The Dutchman, Spoon River, Roving Cowboy, Danger, Hit and Run Lover, Vegematic Song, Elvis Imitator, Talk Backwards, Whispering Man, Crazy Mary and The Wonderful World of Sex.
GAMBLE ROGERS CONNECTION: Earlier this year, Michael returned to Florida to appear as a headliner for the 10th Annual Gamble Rogers Folk Festival in St Augustine. (Michael was a friend of the late Gamble Rogers.) Per the festival's producer: "It is fitting that Michael should be here to help us celebrate our 10th anniversary. When you go into a venture like this, you don't know if its the right thing or not. When Michael walked on the that stage at our first festival, we knew we had done it right. Michael is one of the best song-writers in the business. His wit, his voice, his guitar playing and especially his lyrics combine to make for a wonderful day."
